JOIN ILLINOIS COUNCIL OF THE BLIND FOR 3RD ANNUAL CONGRESSIONAL CALL-IN DAY
Springfield, IL – The Illinois Council of the Blind (ICB) would like to encourage everyone who can to join us on Tuesday, February 28 for our 3rd annual Congressional Call-in Day. Illinois citizens who are blind or visually impaired and others interested are encouraged to contact their representative in the United States House of Representatives and our two U.S. Senators, Senator Dick Durbin and Senator Tammy Duckworth. We need you to encourage them to support:
- Medicare coverage for Low Vision Devices Demonstration Project. Due to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services overly broad interpretation of the Medicare Lense exclusion, Medicare will not pay for low vision devices such as Video Magnifiers that people with visual impairments need to live independently. This is an inequality in Medicare coverage which must be corrected.
- Encourage the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to make information more widely available in alternative formats such as large print, Braille and audio recording. Individuals who cannot or choose not to access Medicare information online are unable to privately and independently read such things as Medicare Explanations of Benefits and other materials.
- (Senate Only) ratification of the Marrakesh Treaty on copyrighted materials. Assuming the U.S. State Department sends a clean ratification package for Marrakesh to the Senate, it needs to be ratified as soon as possible. Marrakesh would allow for copyrighted materials in specialized formats to be shared across the world. This would save costs while putting books and other materials into more people’s hands, especially in the developing world, promoting literacy and making it easier for people to pursue educational and employment opportunities.
On Congressional Call-in day, you can contact Senator Durbin’s office at 202-224-2152 or via durbin.senate.gov. Contact Senator Duckworth at 202-224-2854, duckworth.senate.gov. You may contact your local public library, center for independent living or election authority to get the name and phone number of your representative.
ICB will sponsor two conference calls to afford those interested in participating in Congressional Call-in Day an opportunity to learn about the issues we will be advocating for and asking any questions they may have. These calls will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 4 p.m., and Wednesday, February 22 at 8 p.m. Call into 712-432-0800, access code: 1087630# to participate in either of these calls. Links to recordings of each call will be put on the ICB Website.
In the current political climate, it is more important than ever that we advocate for the issues important to us. Congressional Call-in Day is one way to do that. Thank you in advance for your time, interest and participation.
